Twitter isn’t for everyone
Recently I was asked if every business should have a Twitter page. Maybe. Before jumping into Twitter you need to take a step back and answer 5 questions: (My regular readers may recognize this list as the same questions to answer before embarking on a Facebook Page for your business. Outlining a sound marketing strategy before implementation is critical to making your venture in both platforms successful!)
- What is your business objective for being on Twitter?
- Do you have a regular source of content to talk about (copy, links, photos, podcasts, video etc)
- Do you have the time to invest in building your community?
- Are you prepared to maintain your Twitter community on a regular basis over time?
- Are you ready to interact and respond to your customers when they give you feedback — both good and bad.
The only thing worse than not having a Twitter page for your business, is having a Twitter page that you don’t have time, money or interest in maintaining. Twitter is a long term relationship strategy. The largest cost involved is the time you spend on it — which can be substantial over time.
Be sure to figure out how you want to measure your return on investment for your time and money spent. If you think you have a strong rational for jumping in, then go for it!
